Warrant issued in police corru

Three former policemen identified as allegedly corrupt officers during a Police Integrity Commission inquiry were due to face a committal hearing at Downing Local Court in Sydney today.

Only two of the officers showed up. The third, former Victorian policeman James Anthony McCabe, 37, did not appear. His lawyer, Gordon Elliott confirmed his client was in Cambodia, and there was no extradition arrangement with Australia.

Magistrate Pat O'Shane said his request that a warrant for McCabe's arrest be delayed was "novel", then issued the warrant.

"It won't be executed in Cambodia, I understand that, but if he lands in Darwin in the middle of the night..." Ms O'Shane said.

In earlier court appearances it has been alleged that McCabe and former NSW police detective sergeant Samuel John Foster, 42, used their police issued Glock pistols to rob a drug dealer.

The two had been seconded to the Australian Crime Commission to assist in fighting drug trafficking.

Foster was removed from the NSW police force in May 2004

Foster is facing 16 charges, including robbery, corruption and alleged drug offences.

Another former NSW policeman, detective senior constable Baljeet Singh Dhadlie, 40, was allegedly caught up in a PIC sting operation against Foster involving 1000 placebo "ecstasy" tablets.

He faces three charges, involving drug, corruption and deception offences. Dhadlie had worked in the dignitary protection unit until his removal from the police in May 2004.

The committal hearing was adjourned until tomorrow.
